New Year, New Adventure! (Dec-Feb Outfits)

It’s a new year and it’s time for me to find my new adventure! But don’t worry, I’m not abandoning Sheaves, but things are going to change around here…

december outfits_wm (2)

For the last 6 months (since moving from Sweden to CA) I’ve enjoyed making my monthly outfits posts, it was a fun way to see my style evolve and chronicle my ensembles and the different places I went. Last year was also when I started this blog and YouTube channel as a way to express more of the things I’m passionate about that weren’t exactly suited for Tales of Sheaves.

I was happy to complete my 4 seasons of lookbooks from my time in Sweden and when we moved to California I started a new venture, my #ROADTORETRO! The goal of this series was to share what I learn on my road to rediscover my style as well as my healing journey (inside and out) and my first step was to chop off my long locks! I had fun playing with my new hair and getting different looks with pieces I’ve had in my wardrobe as well as slowing adding some new thrifted ones. I was fortunate to even add a few new retro pieces from Pinup Girl Clothing that I had been wanting for a long time.

Right after Halloween was over, life started changing for my husband & I. He had worked a great job during the fall but we started feeling the effects of starting over in another country. Also, we were feeling the post-Halloween/pre-Christmas depression since the holidays are always hard for us because one of us is always away from their family. Beginning of December, a dear friend of ours passed away and we were grateful to get a chance to say goodbye but it felt the beginning of our spiral down that led to us both getting sick at different times and a lot of heavy sadness…

I finally started feeling strong enough in my hand since my surgery and I start looking for work with no success thus far. Then came the new year and Jonas was also out of a job again and we really started to feel the strain between family and our financial situation.

december outfits_wm (3)

We researched jobs and apartments like crazy to realize a few very sobering facts that are working against us. Because of my surgery I can’t go back (nor did I plan to anyway) being a hairstylist yet that is all the job experience and college education I have. Jonas has been turned down by several jobs because he hasn’t lived in America long enough. We both don’t have any credit history because we traveled so much and therefore it’s impossible to find an apartment.

We reached out to friends and family which didn’t lead to anything promising. It has gotten so bad that we were just going to pack up and move out of state because the cost of living in CA is so outrageous, but I wasn’t prepared to leave my family so soon. All in all, we feel absolutely stuck at the bottom of a very deep dark hole and have no idea how we are going to crawl out.

december outfits_wm (4)

Because of all this stress, I’ve had little to no inspiration to put outfits together let alone take photos and blog about them. Besides, I was wearing the same things over and over again and realized I was failing as a fashion blogger since I had no new clothes to share. Yes, I’m all for mixing and matching your pieces to get new outfits but the harsh truth is I even ran out of those and can’t even afford to shop at my favorite thrift store, Savers, anymore…and let’s not even talk about the weight I’ve gained over the holidays and from all the strain.

december outfits_wm (6)

I’m not sharing all this for you to feel sorry for me, I’m sharing because I don’t mind being an open book and I want to be transparent. I started to blog also to share the ups and downs of my journey to bring hope to others and all though my #roadtoretro seems to have flat-lined and almost died, I believe it’s all apart of the journey!

december outfits_wm (5)

I’m a firm believer in following your dreams but staying flexible, because you never know what on your journey may lead you to a new unexpected dream that was better than you could have ever imagined. That’s what gives me hope during the darkest of times and helps me to not see my misadventures as “failures” but as all apart of the adventure!

feb 2016 outfits

So, with all that being said I’m not sure what this year holds for Sheaves because the winds of change have been blowing and I welcome the new opportunities and I’m not sure yet how that will translate to my blog and YouTube channel. However, I have been using SNAPCHAT a lot since I got a new phone which has been a great way to instantly share my experiences, feelings, joys, and the occasional foodie posts 😉 I’d love for you to join me there: lindsay.sheaves! Thank you all for the support along the way and I look forward to the new adventures ahead! Bye for now,

Pinup Girl Retro Fashion Haul + Review!

retro haul_thumbnail

Hi again! Coming at you guys with my first retro clothing haul and review! As I mentioned in my video (below) I finally made the jump and purchased my first retro clothing pieces for the D23 Expo, hence this gorgeous Snow White jenny skirt from Pinup Girl Clothing (Size L)!

retro haul (8)

I had been eyeing this beauty for a long time now and was so thrilled they still had this print available on one of their most popular skirts! I love the quality of the material and vibrancy of the colors. It took me some getting used to the volume around the waist line but I just had to play around with it and see where it best sat on my hips and I adjusted to this new shape on me!

retro haul (7)

I’m also completely sold on Doll Me Up Inc’s vintage style hair scarfs, I can see myself buying many more colors as they are such a cute and easy way to dress up your hair, which is great for some one like me who had surgery on my hand recently and I can’t curl my hair every day.

EEKKK I’m just so thrilled I FINALLY own a Sourpuss Clothing Spooksville bat skirt (Size L)!!!

retro haul (9)

Even before I wanted to start building my retro wardrobe I had swooned over this amazing bat print and it is one of my favorite and more popular skirts! I get so many compliments every time I wear it and I love how the fabric is stiff enough on it’s own to flair out but still be very comfy. I find adding a belt is needed though to pull my outfits together.

retro haul (5)

My only purchase that I still haven’t put to use is this canvas underskirt from Pinup Girl clothing. I read the reviews and thought it’d be the perfect thing for me as I’m not ready to jump into the world of petticoats and thought this would help me transition into having lots of volume under my dresses and skirts. But alas, I just haven’t been able to figure out how to make it look right as it does in these photos. I will keep trying with different pieces to get the right fit and flair.

retro haul (11)

I still can’t believe how lucky I got finding this Hot Rod Honey dress by Pinup Girl Clothing at the Buffalo Exchange for $16 (Size M)!!!

retro haul (10)

I’m so blessed to have been able to have purchase the pieces above but I also love finding a good deal and treasure hunting at thrift stores, it’s a magical feeling when you find a beautiful dress like this just in your size, like it was waiting for you! I can’t get over how comfy and cute it is, perfect for fall!

retro haul (4)

I couldn’t find a photo or link from Stop Staring of this adorable red and white polka dot dress. It was gifted to me recently by my lovely friend Victoria and perhaps they don’t make the same style anymore, but I absolutely love it and it was the perfect retro Minnie Mouse dress for the D23 expo! I had to get it hemmed but otherwise it was a perfect fit (Size L)!

retro haul (6)

I hope you enjoyed my first retro clothing haul and review, click the video below to see the clothing in action and hear more of my thoughts! As always thank you for following along on my #roadtoretro as I rediscover my style and show you what I learn along the way!

Dapper Day Fall 2015 (Cruella De Vil DisneyBound)

DAPPER DAY!!! I had a fabulous time at my first dapper day at the swankiest place on earth, DISNEYLAND! It was so fun getting a peek into how Disneyland may have looked on opening day since everyone was dressed in their Sunday best.

dapper day-fall 2015_thumbnail

I think my favorite part though was seeing what creative outfits people came up with and even created themselves! Jonas & I went with a 101 Dalmatians couple DisneyBound as Cruella De Vil and Pongo!

dapper day-fall 2015_wm (1)

Who can disagree that Cruella is the most dapper Disney villain of them all?!

cruella_grid

We actually hadn’t planned on doing a Disney inspired dapper look but between a few thrift store trips the pieces just started calling our names and before we knew it, BAM, we had this cute ensemble!

 dapper day-fall 2015_wm (2)

I have a new favorite thrift store (Savers) where I got most of the pieces to my outfit, I can’t even believe how lucky i got! The first piece to catch my eye was the spotted top which was actually a dress…but the bottom part was really unflattering. Then I found this adorable skirt with pleats and cut off the bottom of the spotted dress and VOILA, it looks like a new dress!

dapper day-fall 2015_wm (3)

DETAILS! I love adding special touches to make the look even more unique! I added a Cruella De Vil Disney pin to the bow on my top paired with red satin gloves for that oh so glamorous Cruella look!

dapper day-fall 2015_wm (4)

I knew I wanted a cute fancy little hat to complete the outfit but was loosing hope that I’d find one in time (and was too late to order one online) but then on another trip to Savers I found this adorable little red hat from the Halloween section!!!

Since we recently moved to CA i stumbled upon a few pieces of scrap dalmatian fabric (from the time I was Cruella for Halloween when my hair was actually half black & white) and added it as a trim which I think totally sealed the dapper dalmatian look! (Comment if you’d like to see a DIY or outfit tutorial)

   dapper day-fall 2015_wm (5)

I can’t wait till the next dapper day in the spring where hopefully it won’t be as hot and we can spend more time there and seeing everyone’s outfits! This amazing unofficial day keeps getting bigger each year and I’m so glad I went to the Dapper Day Expo the following day to see all the lovely retro clothing lines and vintage booths! I hope you enjoyed seeing our outfits and coming along with me and Jonas in the vlog!

3 Disney Retro Inspired Outfits (D23 EXPO 2015)

My wonderful husband had surprised me this last Christmas (when we were still living in Sweden) with tickets to the D23 EXPO, the ultimate Disney fan event!!! I was so surprised and immediately started crying tears of joy! We knew we’d be moving to California in the new year but since Jonas was still in the midst of his green card process we weren’t sure when it would happen! There was always a part of us that was afraid to get too excited for this convention in case our crazy random lives took us elsewhere BUT we ended up moving to CA in July! So I can truly say that going to D23 was a dream come true after all our hard work!!!

d23 lookbook_thumbnailD23 is definitely a place for Disney fans to pull out their best Disney inspired costumes and cosplay. Alas, because of our current situation we didn’t even want to think about trying to figure out costumes (though we have many ideas for the future) and went with Disneybounding instead, which personally I love and find can be just as creative as cosplay, except you can wear it anywhere!

OUTFIT 1: For the first day I went with a classic Minnie Mouse inspired look! A sweet friend recently gifted me this cute red & white polka dot dress that instantly made me think of Minnie’s cute retro style!

d23 lookbook_grid (1)

Mickey Ears-Disneyland // Dress-Stop Staring // Belt-Thrifted // Red Everline Flats-Bait Footwear

d23 lookbook_wm (5)

OUTFIT 2: Saturday was the day we devoted to the “Once Upon a Time” panel “An Evening With Snow White & The Evil Queen” (which btw, I had a total fangirl moment when we saw Ginnifer Goodwin & Lana Parrilla walking the show floor and taking selfies a few hours before the panel which you can watch HERE)

d23 lookbook_grid (2)

Of course I had to do a Snow White Disneybound for this special occasion and I knew this skirt was exactly what I wanted for that retro/pinup outfit inspired by the fairest one of all! Isn’t the print divine?

d23 lookbook_wm (11)

I felt like a princess at the ball in my first ever Pinup Girl Clothing piece and I got so many compliments!

Hair Scarf- Doll Me Up Inc. // “Once Upon a Time” Necklace-DIY // Apple Necklace-Gift // Yellow Belt-Thrifted // Skirt-Pinup Girl Clothing // Black Flats-Payless

d23 lookbook_wm (9)

OUTFIT 3: By the 3rd day my feet were begging for comfort so I put together a more “casual” outfit showing off my Disney Goth side, which oddly enough I think got the most compliments when I felt like I was more dressed down than the other days! Go figure!

Bow-Swap meet // Top-H&M (In Sweden) // Skirt-Ross // Belt-eBay // Tights-eBay // Shoes-T.U.K. Creepers

d23 lookbook_grid (3)

Which outfit is YOUR favorite?! I had fun putting together these looks together and…I guess I like wearing red?!? I hope to do more Disney inspired looks in the future!

d23 lookbook_grid (4)

I hope you enjoy seeing the outfits in action as well as some clips from the expo! If you’d like to see the full coverage of this dream come true weekend just head over to Tales of Sheaves!

There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow

I watched Disney’s new movie “Tomorrowland: A World Beyond” recently and while I left the theater a bit confused at some of the plot points (I definitely would love to watch it again, I think it’s one of those kinds of movies you understand and love the more you see) but it was indeed a thrilling adventure through different eras and dimensions!

The film really drives home the themes of taking charge of your destiny, hoping in the future, and the power of positivity which are all important truths I’ve been learning in my life as of late especially in light of our big move from Sweden to California this month!

tomorrowland (2)

My favorite part was the beginning at the 1964 World’s Fair in NY, I always love me some great mid-century modern Disney! No spoilers here, but I sure loved how they used the “It’s A Small World” attraction premiere in a very unique way for the story!

world fair 1964(2)

I also had a Disney nerd moment when the song “There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” from the Carousel of Progress (one of the other attractions that Disney debuted at the ’64 World’s Fair) started playing and my husband looked at me with such surprise as I started singing along!

This song has always been special to me as it holds so much hope and those Sherman Brothers (who also wrote the “It’s A Small World” theme song/Mary Poppins soundtrack) sure knew how to write a catchy melody and I think the song and lyrics really set the perfect tone for the movie:

“There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow
Shining at the end of every day
There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow
And tomorrow’s just a dream away

Man has a dream and that’s the start
He follows his dream with mind and heart
And when it becomes a reality
It’s a dream come true for you and me”

tomorrowland (3)

From the moment I first saw the promotional posters for “Tomorrowland” with the fields of wheat I was instantly reminded of my namesake “Sheaves” and the blog post/photo shoot/video my husband & I did about why we call our married life adventures Tales of Sheaves inspired by chapter 126 of Psalms.

tomorrowland

It almost felt like Disney had seen our post because the ending of the move was so parallel to the feeling of hope and dreams we tried to create with our video, but again I won’t say any spoilers! I’d love if you’d like to pop on over to that post to find out more about what Sheaves means to us!

we are sheaves_wm (5)

I’m so grateful that we have this opportunity to move to the States and that we will always have Sweden as an option too, not so many are so fortunate to be able to move countries for new opportunities! I feel like we are taking charge of our destinies rather than remaining unfilled with our current situation and to try and do something about it!

we are sheaves_wm (11)

We of course have no idea what lies ahead for us and I suspect this will also be a hard journey but I hope the trade off of turning our dreams into a reality will make it all worth it! Facing the unknown can be frightening but I constantly have to choose to hope rather than despair. That’s where the movie’s theme of hoping in the future really struck a chord with me!

Continuing from that thought is the final thing I wanted to mention is how they incorporated this wise old Cherokee Indian proverb into the movie:  wolves (2)With out big move coming up also comes a lot of stress and fear and it’s really pushed me to see how if I let myself nurture those feelings it only feeds the “evil wolf” more and leads into a downward spiral that effects every area of my life so I have to choose to embrace the “good wolf” of hope and light instead.

Life can be a difficult journey so I’ve started making a conscious effort to appreciate the happy adventures in the likely event that misadventures will also happen! Choosing hope and light each day isn’t always easy and it’s normal to have moments of negative emotions but the important part is to keep believing, there’s a great big beautiful tomorrow!

Bye for now,

Lindsay of Sheaves
